So there I was, just soaking up all of the great information and energy at the San Francisco Green Business Conference when along came the CNBC camera crew. My first thought was that Donny Deutsch would see it and invite me on his show. With the Big Idea in mind, I did my best to make the interview a spectacular success. Unfortunately, when the video was finally released, it appears that I was left on the cutting room floor. I sure hope they recycled it. As the summer season rolls to a close here at Ecowood Displays, the focus begins to turn to fall store openings. More than any other time of year, the deadline for getting your doors open and ready to receive customers has a major impact on profitability. Early planning and ordering of your fixtures, cabinets and accessories is crucial to a smooth start up. Even if you are just doing some updating or adding a few new lines to your mix, getting every detail right and having everything ready on time is paramount.

We have recently increased our production capacity here at Ecowood Displays. What this means to you is faster turnaround times.

We are currently running about 4 to 6 weeks lead time on most items, although as we do runs of specific product lines some items may be available sooner.

Bottom line, call in your order early to get on the production board for the fastest delivery possible.

When our good buddy, TC, over at The Trout Underground was knocked down with the “I went flyfishing in Maine instead of working” flu we knew we had to help. Problem was, we were off to the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market to show our stuff. After talking with some very knowledgeable friends, we came to the conclusion that if we wished good karma on TC, reread “The Secret” and had a couple of beers at the show, he would get better. Wow!!! After doing only one of the three recommendations, we returned to Mt. Shasta to find him well again. I can only say that beer karma really works…

Well, we finally retired the old faithful shop vehicle. Having an SUV in the country is very different than in the city. It is expected to haul tools, supplies, firewood, store fixtures, flyrods and on occasion, people. It is usually full of things moving from one location to another, passing itself off as a van, pickup or bus. It rarely moves about the countryside without purpose and always with authority. It gave it’s best years to Ecowood, never complained much and aside from some serious fuel consumption habits has been a very frugal vehicle by and large. When it came to deciding what to get to replace the beast, the choice was difficult. We would have to think greener and make some logistical changes that would eliminate the need for the gonzo SUV. After figuring out how to get supplies and inventory from one place to another, only one choice seemed clear.

As in every decision to be a little better at this green business thing, the choices seem hard in the beginning, but after getting everything in line, the reality is easier, less costly and most importantly, better for mother earth…

Over the past 6 years Ecowood Displays has taken many steps towards a more meaningful position in the “Green” world. Although we felt that we were headed in the right direction from the beginning, the definition of a sustainable business has been slowly evolving. We still feel very passionately that our mission and goals are on target, but it seems that the bulls-eye continues to shift. One of the great things about small businesses is their ability to move quickly and efficiently when the world around them changes. Big business has a great deal of trouble changing course as quickly. They can sure belt out the Green PR in a moments notice and admittedly have done some great things for the environment, but shareholders still have a higher place in the pecking order than the average citizen.

Ecowood purchases 100% wind power (Pacific Power Blue Sky) for our facility in Mt. Shasta and purchases carbon credits for our trade show travel through Native Energy. We have a great in house recycling program set up by the California Department of Conservation, Division of Recycling, who will provide kits for your business. One of our favorite small steps is our firewood program. The unusable wood waste that results from our manufacturing (which could be it’s 3rd reuse) is donated to the community for winter heating. Here in the mountains wood heat is still an important heat source for families with limited resources.

This may feel a little like some chest thumping, but my point is that if you have a small business and the desire to be green, just take it one step at a time. The impact you have on the planet will be huge over time and the effort to get there is much less than you may imagine,

It’s been a while since I could find the time to post. But now a break (although brief) in the action gives me a minute to talk about the new events here at Ecowood Displays.

The big news here is the opening of our new facility in Tulsa, OK. We have been planning this project for quite a while and getting all of the pieces together has been an exciting challenge. The Tulsa Plant will be using the same sustainable materials and processes that we have been using here in Mt. Shasta with the added benefit of a smaller carbon footprint and lower shipping costs to the Midwest and East. Our new plant is larger allowing us to tackle larger projects. Our focus on taking care of our customers while maintaining our environmental mission will not change and we have new environmentally sensitive materials and designs in the works that will help you to make your retail environment as eco friendly as possible.

The newest addition to our product line is our BGreen™ Bamboo Hangers. Made from sustainable bamboo and available in several styles, these high quality hangers will add a great look to your garment display while keeping your environmental mission strong. Check them out.
